Introduction

The clash between humanism and scholasticism was the defining battle of intellectual life in the sixteenth century until the reformation came along. The schoolmen worked at universities, the humanists outside them. We also saw how the impact of melancthon transformed teaching at wittenberg, tubingen, and ultimately across protestant europe.
