We're geared up to want to present that stuff as a battle of good versus evil where in reality, like everything is muddled. It's not like we were the good guys in World War II, but it's very comforting and satisfying to believe that we were. And I think that, that carries over into our fiction too.
Good Omens was written by a sort of science fiction supergroup, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It's one of those books where it's as fun to chew on the turns of phrase as it is to find out what happens, which is pretty amazing since it's literally about the end of the world.
