Jazz was popular music back then in the United States. In fact, it was the actual definition of popular music. There wasn't really much else. The Chinese loved it. They were crazy about jazz. And part of the reason was that jazz to them and in fact being popular music,. Jazz was not like we think of it today, very serious, very complicated. It was dance music. Shanghai was filled with cabarets and ballrooms where young people came into dance. This music was from... It was Western. It was exciting. It was sexy.
