The Rise of Christianity in the Mediterranean
Christianity had been bubbling below the surface of the Roman Empire for centuries. By Constantine the Great, three centuries later, Christianity had grown widespread enough that it could no longer be ignored. The rise of Christianity would greatly influence the development of science in the west. Science during this period then declined at least in part because these types of knowledge weren't valued in the intellectual world of late antiquity.
