The Origins of the State
The state is basically a glorified term for how all states were born in crime. The aristocracy of the sword, the old warrior caste that become the first aristocrats and noblemen around Europe, they did. They were warlords. Once you become a stationary bandit, you become a noble with the tides of the land,. It's actually in your interest over time to invest more in the resources. And almost every village takes this deal because it's not a good deal by modern terms; but up until fairly recently, it was a pretty good deal.
