The Relationship Between Stress and Psychiatry
The hypothalamus is a brain region that's located kind of at the middle or base of the brain. Cortisol travels all throughout the bloodstream and targets many different organs in order to allow the organism to cope with stress. It also feeds back up into the brain, where it has receptors that bind cortisol. High levels of cortisol are toxic to those cells in the hippocampus; they actually kill them off.
