The Pyramid Texts Are the First Religious Texts About the Egyptian Afterlife

The earliest texts that we have describing the Egyptian afterlife are what are sometimes called the pyramid texts. They were written on and illustrated on the walls of various pyramids, like in the Old Kingdom. And then people started writing them on papyrus scrolls that would be buried with the dead. These are known as books of the dead, just means a book that's owned by a dead person. Even the book of the dead is a papyrus that tells us all about it.
