The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary
In 1470, some internal strife forced Edward to run away to Flanders. He left his pregnant wife Elizabeth and their three daughters behind. So what did they do? They ran for Sanctuary at Westminster Abbey. Some historians believe that because of that, upwards of a thousand people each year went looking there for Sanctuary. The last time they were seen was two weeks after their uncle became King.
