Gish took this 50 year period of time from Nixon's very stage managed 1972 visit to Mao Zedong's China to the present through COVID. She also writes characters who end up in the US and they lose their Chinese culture, their language. There's a lot of tension there between expectations and duty that the older generation imposes on the younger generation.
