i grew up in not exactly a religious household but we didn't go to church. christmas dinner and having a drink and seeing friends and family more about that really. i think so much of it comes from this victorian sanitize version of christmas which is more appropriate for children. For the first time brings children to the center of the story other than obviously the christ child in the nativity story. It was always an adult festival about adults getting boozed up more than it was about kids.
