I walked across Afghanistan just after 911. It was an amazing time to walk across the country. The main thing I took away from it wasn't the few moments of danger. But more how wonderful it was to spend 550 nights in village houses and hear them talk about their government, their religion, their lives. And it changed my life because I had been a British diplomat. They can't even turn on their phones.
