The choice of languages on the BBC reflected the changing world. When Man Datori Palestine became the State of Israel in May 1948, the World Service started broadcasting in Hebrew. Probably the most influential literary strand ever broadcast on the world's service was a programme for writers from the West Indies. Over its 15 years it showcased work by hundreds of contributors including future Nobel Prize winners VS Nipal and Derek Walcott.
