The Ransoming Substitute
His happy poverty made us feel rotten about our love of things. His lowly and unimpressive way, hobnobbing with the outcasts did not endorse us in our aspirations for power and reputation. And so he was a rejected servant. When that kind of servanthood meets this kind of rebellion, you get rejection, crucifixion, despising. The Lord has caused the iniquity of us to fall on him and crush him. That's the heart of the gospel. What he wrought on good Friday is what he wrought. He was a ransoming substitute.
