"I grew up in Detroit and the public school system and I read very little about slavery that wasn't in the context of kind of understanding who Abraham Lincoln was," she says. "The omissions of the stories of people's of color, indigenous people, ethnic communities in our history books is a real shame." She hopes her book will be helpful in learning more about Native American culture. 'How else will we understand really how far we've come without understanding where we began'
