Taoism and Zen Buddhism - What's Relevant for Us?
The Dauta Jing is the earliest book in Taoism, and that dates from around 600 BCE. In ancient China, a monotheistic system very similar to Christianity fell apart. The seminal Chinese philosophers were trying to rebuild a philosophical system out of the ashes of that monotheism. And so what they built was what's relevant for us is the Taoism. So then that idea, again, which came largely from Native Americans, went to Europe, transformed Wordsworth,. Then it came back to America through those writers, went through Rome and Emerson read them., It comes back to Thoreau and that influences the intellectual history of the 19th century in the US.
