There are several things that have to be pointed out misunderstandings about the movie. The notion that it's just cut, sentimental, schlock is a myth. It was not a commercial success at the time. And there is a very strong dark element in the movie,. Not only in the sequence withan where george sees an alternative world that is much more coarse and vulgar than bedford falls. But also in the scenes before that, where we see george's life story unfolding.
