Madam Rastelle was born and trow in Painswick, England in 1812. She entered service as a maid of all work. By 1831, she was living in New York on the Lower East Side. Her husband died leaving her a single mother with a toddler. Being a single mother in that age meant that she really couldn't return to work as a maid.
