The Aztec Empire and the Spanish Empire
In the 16 hundreds, over a century after the fall of tenostitlan, mexico city grew to fill the footprint of the old aztec capital. The spanish did their best to eradicate the culture that it had fostered. Religious orders like the franciscans, jesuits and domini ans flooded into mexico. Any aztec books or codices discovered were burned in order to erase the people's memory of their own history. To day, the aztec language of nawatel is still spoken by nearly two million people mostly based in rural communities in mex Mexico.
