Robeson's African American Folk Music
He was the first person to put on concerts consisting entirely of black american music. He presciently observed, for example, that dizzy gill Gillespie and charlie parker would eventually be seen as great composers like debusy and strevinsky. Robeson proposed that immersion in the black folk tradition could be a step towards hending something more universal. This idea of a universal body of music intrigued me, and i pursued it along many fascinating paths.
