The Importance of Being Impressive

Scientific stagnation or at least inefficiency is due to a misalignments of prestige and prestige. Some progress happens but more is a side effect of being impressive. In fact, if you look at referee reports for journal articles they're almost entirely about whether the thing is impressively done. And so these systems are not designed to produce maximal intellectual progress.
