I think i struggled for a long time against myself defining myself by what i couldn't do. When i went deaf, i was thinking about the fact that i was deaf a lot and my resa couldn't smell. I had to e tis pack because those things, i felt, were intrinsic to my identity. And it turned out to not be the case that i could forge a new identity and live comfortably in a just the disabilities that i have. As a result, it took years getting back to work.
