White slavery narratives were so closely tied to immigration in the u.S., they really didn't get a lot of traction in the late nineteenth century, outside of the social purity movement. This change happened because there was growing anxiety about emigration. Between 19 hundred and 19 14, 13 million immigrants entered the united states. But this was a new breed of immigrant. Previous waves of emigration came from scandinavia, britain, germany and ireland. To day, this enormous influx hails from russia, austria, hungary, italy and the southern countries about the eastern end of the mediterranean. We no longer receive accessions from the best peoples
