The Relationship Between a Writer and a Political Movement
The relationship between a writer and a political movement is not really straightforward. Richard Wright was reading people like Dreyzer, that he was discovering writers like Dostoyevsky in the John Reed Club. The party helped to form him but when he became larger than the party itself had to go off on his own. Edward Said also got a lot from that relationship to the PLO that had opened a world for him that would not otherwise have been so accessible.
