The Thick Rules
There's almost no rule which really doesn't encounter exceptions and require tweaking. The shift from thick to thin rules is an interesting long-term evolution, but not irreversible. You can build islands of stability so that life becomes relatively predictable. That's the kind of micro climate in which the thin rules flourish - whether or not they're mathematical or simply bureaucratic.
