The Disruption of Taiwanese Identity in the 20th Century

Taiwanese identity has been shaped by a series of disruptions in the 20th century. The first was when Japan left and Taiwan came back under Chinese rule, but that didn't feel like it to Taiwanese. In another way, "the idea that Taiwan would be left alone to face the Communists released Taiwan from the necessity to pretend to be China," he says. But as long as this fiction was sustainable, Taiwan was unable to move either toward a new identity or a new political system.
