Is Licensure a Good Policy?
In the 1950s, less than 5% of US jobs needed a license. Today, that number is approaching 30%. Maureen O'Mara: It seems clear that you don't think licensing is purely for the interests of consumers. So can you comment on that? For some occupations, licensure is definitely an appropriate policy. But where we've seen so much growth in licensing has occurred in occupations where the consumer rests are low or really speculative.
