Psalm 87 is a song of zion, which may also have been written during or just after the exile. But psalm 88 might just be the bleakest prayer in this entire book. Verse two and three captures it: Well, let my prayer come before thee. Incline thine ear unto my cry. For my soul is full of troubles. My life draweth nigh to the grave. And with death staring him in the face, this is what he wonders. He's asking from a place of despondency and depression and darkness. That's what he's wondering about the dark and the forgetfulness. It's the grave. The land of forgetfulness
