Introduction

Pilvi Fusio is a senior researcher at the Center for East Asian Studies in Finland. Her dissertation looked to long-term recovery efforts following the March 2011 earthquake in tsunami in northeastern Japan. We're recording on March 10, 2023, meaning it's now almost exactly 12 years since the devastating earthquake and tsunami claimed nearly 20,000 lives. The town of Yamamoto was also affected already before the disaster by rural decline.
