The Evolution of Mathematical Communication Since Archimedes
In the 1800s there was a move to expunge geometry, or visual representation, from the teaching and communication of math. Even in the twentieth century, there were people who saw that as an aesthetic virtue. "I think this is a really perverted, freakish, wrong, twisted view of communication," he says. If you make great discoveries but can't communicate them with your fellow scientists, they might be overlooked.
