The Importance of Direct Action in Policy Change
The real action remains in persuading those people who can with the stroke of a pen, institute large scale changes. So I'm not saying that it's unimportant to try to influence policymakers. And I would also say that the marches themselves aren't really what I mean by direct action. They may be less effective for changing policy because you're right, policymakers can largely ignore them. But they have the potential to protect individuals from particular acts of state violence.
