The Role of the Sea in the Pearl Diving Industry
Ceylon is an island. And so these are the pearl fishers of the title, who are working to earn their livelihood by harvesting pearls. They're just the free dive business, because they didn't have tanks back then, have oxygen. So if you're going to be a pearl diver, one of the things that's going to be very, very important to you is big lungs. Well, that and the weather matters. You can have raging storms. You want calm seas in order to survive this.
