The great recession and then the 2010 Tea Party wave election are really critical points in this history. The response was a massive social movement that pushed back led in part by Helen Jim, who since has been elected to city councilman is now a leading candidate for mayor. Chicago's 2012 teachers union strike just opened an entirely new era for teachers unionism in the country. But it's also the story of a particular vision of education reform running out of steam.
