The Origins of the Language of Power

The promotion of standard French really sort of begins after the end of the French monarchy. In China, all these different Chinese languages are viewed as one language and they consider Mandarin to be the standard. There's an interesting thing in language policy there where like Cantonese speakers might disagree with that position.
