I can imagine it was a huge challenge because you're essentially smashing together these two wholly different political contexts, the first being of the Second World War. And yeah, I can imagine for him that was also a weird sort of whiplash that he wasn't anticipating. But this era of American politics isn't like my strong suit, but I also didn't know who he was. He's delving into more specific political or historical territory here than I think what even most Americans are probably familiar with.
