Energy, unlike momentum, can only ever be one thing. It's the motion of mass. Potential energy is in a sense a fiction that physicists come up with to keep energy conserved. So imagine our universe is like a flat earth with constant gravity downwards. And every time you go through a portal gaining potential energy.
