I was completely obsessed with Michael Jackson when I was young and I wrote him long letters. It always gave me this conduit back into the novel. The last few years have been a bit difficult, yes. But also in terms of his reputation and legacy there's no doubt that unpleasantness and darkness was also part of his genius. And it seems to speak very truthfully about the essence of black identity.
