Be prepared for blood loss, post-op swelling and airway emergencies with wire cutters and spare tracheostomy tube at the bedside. We need to get information on bag mass ventilation and intubation options in case of unplanned extubation. Check if non-invasive positive pressure ventilation is contraindicated in the patient. Forcing a trache during that time can actually create a false track in the pre-tracheal fascia. Some trache may have stay-sooches for guidance. Difficult airway patients may need deep sedation or paralysis until the first trachestomy change.
