Nixon and Kissinger's Attempt to Reconnect With China
When Nixon becomes president in 1969, him and his national security advisor, leader, secretary of state Henry Kissinger, they're really starting to want to rethink this relationship. What's the initial thinking behind trying to cast aside some of this isolation and at least try and establish or re-establish contact between Beijing and Washington? I think we might say that there were at least three important factors that guided Nixon and Kissinger to the decision to try to reach out to China. The Cold War to do strategic competition with the Soviet Union. There was a genuine interest in reconnecting with the Chinese people.
