John Kerry's 2004 Presidential Campaign Was About Values

The 2004 election was about Iraq. There were of course other issues in play, but the central focus of both campaigns was Iraq. John Kerry's presidential campaign was that he was a very different guy from George W. Bush. Americans hadn't actually yet settled on Iraq being a quote mistake.
