The Importance of Speaking Standard English
As a child, Clarence had grown up speaking the language of the enslaved people of Georgia. As one of only two black students attending a high school seminary, his dialect made him a target of ridicule. Not only does it remind everybody around him that he's different, it also reminds them that he's of a lower caste. It has to be monumental for him.
