Positive and Negative Theology
Theologians and philosophers of religion frequently contrast two attitudes concerning the human attempt to grasp God. Negative theology is sometimes called apophatic because the Greek word for denial is apophysis. In their most pessimistic moments, negative theologians may go so far as to deny that we can know God at all.
