The estimate is 90 to 95% of the black community abided by the boycott. Unlike many causes lots of people agreed with the aim but joined in. The movements that are built out of the established network of solitary ties in a community are powerful. They will emerge quickly and you can sustain their participation over a long period of time. It's rare but when it happens it's a force to be reckoned with.
