The first step is to make the organism able to accept a new protein component, an amino acid. Find the genes in case of E. coli where 290 of the 4,200 genes are essential. And so then you drill down into a particular location in one of those essential genes and open up a cavity for this larger organically synthesized amino acid. So we can change one or more proteins that are essential to the core processes of the cell like protein synthesis.
