If we tried to fuse on earth elements that are heavier than hydrogen, you would need it to be even hotter. But if we use isotopes of hydrogen, that's actually feasible to do, essentially. So it's a practicality. And one of the benefits, as I understand it, of fusion rather than fission is that there's much less radioactive waste.
