During the American Revolution, Jones Was a Highly Respected Academic
While at oxford, jones became fascinated with near eastern and far eastern cultures. At the age of 22, he accepted a commission from the king of denmark to translate a persian manuscript into french. The following year, he published a grammar of the persian language which was the first english guide to that language. He also studied law and became a barrister. And befriended other influential scholars such as benjamin franklin who res ed in london for many years before the outbreak of the american revolutionary war. By this point, jones's attention was more focused on india than the American colonies. In 17 83, he envisioned the creation of an asiatic society
