The theory behind streak counters is pretty solid. It's based on this idea that people have lost aversion. They really don't like losing things that they already had. Hollow Knight does it a little bit differently. And so far as when you die, if you're able to fight your way back to the point where you lost, then you are able to earn all of your money back. You have a chance at redemption. I think that's a really elegant solution to the problem.
