In Brooks' paper, only complexity truly matters. This is a very different model from programming than I think what we even get in thisPaper. And when they say most of what we're talking about is accidental, not essential, they mean accidental to the user. It's a historical fact of how we've built software. But because it's not what the user thinks about, it's accidental. The metaphors we use like functional programming, the metaphors we use, the terminology we use,. language we use and that kind of thing are all accidental as well.
