Physicists in the 60s thought force carrying bosons had to be massless. This would make all of the forces of nature very long range, they say. You should be able to feel the electromagnetic force from a great distance, for example. But these supposedly heavy bosons that carried the weak nuclear force didn't seem to fit into the picture.
