Is It a Virtual Channel or a Real Channel?
With hosted channels you can cryptographically prove that the note with puppy X cheated you out of funds. It's something it keeps the peer honest because especially if it's for for pocket change amounts of money like below hundred dollars and they run a huge service. If Bitfinex decided to do that for example they basically are custodian anyways so they could do host the channels easily from a regulatory standpoint.
