The day of the lord as depicted in the book of the 12 should be paradomatic for our thinking about the concept more generally. The imagery of such passages does not merely narrowly refer to a specific event in history, but to the broader theological reality that can be expressed in even more pronounced and dramatic ways. From this announcement of coming judgment, there is the promise of divine mercy and restoration.
